Note:
A major breakthrough in Cropsey’s career came when he began traveling to Greenwood Lake, a place that held deep personal significance for him. Starting at the age of twenty, he visited the area regularly to sketch and at times lived in its vicinity. His connection to the region grew even stronger after he met Maria Cooley there, whom he later married. By the mid-1850s, Cropsey was a leading figure of the second-generation Hudson River School, having achieved substantial professional success. He secured prominent patrons such as the Vanderbilt family and, in recognition of his artistic achievements, received introductions to Queen Victoria during his time in London.[1] His work is held in the most esteemed American museum collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, amongst many others.
