Born in Scotland, James M. Hart immigrated to Albany, New York as a child, where his artistic career soon took root. Known for his bucolic pastoral landscapes of cows, sheep, deer and picnics, he gained wide recognition as a second-generation Hudson River Landscape painter. Hart was elected a full Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1875 and President of the New York Art Club in 1879, garnering gold medals for various works in the 1880s. His work is included in several important collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
