Note
Colman, a second-generation Hudson River painter, was known for his quiet, poetic landscapes. Trained by Asher Durand, he later absorbed the influence of George Inness. During his travels throughout Europe in the 1860s, he began to shift toward a more personal and evocative style and his works is found in many of the nation’s best museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
