Related Work
Mist Rising at Sunset in the Catskills, ca. 1861, oil on canvas, 6¾ x 9½ inches; The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois
Note: According to scholar Kevin Avery, the upper left corner of the composition may depict an overlook of North Mountain in the Catskills. The related work offers a comparable style of impasto paint application, contours of the foliage, and rapid energy of execution. He suggests that the handling of the paint and presumed subject may date the present work to the early 1860s.
