Note

As a young painter, Richards came of age during the peak of Hudson River School artists such as Thomas Cole and Asher Durand. Richards’ landscapes evolved from the romanticized style of this earlier generation to include scientific detail and tactile realism. He was known to spend hours studying waves, observing the changes in light and color with their fluid motion.
