Artist Biography
Simon Parkes
(1954 - 2025)
Simon Parkes was born in Crowthorne, England and studied at the Medway College of Art in Kent. Parkes exhibited his works extensively in the UK and internationally, including at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Saatchi Gallery, and the Venice Biennale. In addition to sculpture, Parkes began painting in the early 1990s and had frequent exhibitions at W.M. Brady & Co. in New York as well as shows in Long Island and Palm Beach. In addition to his favorite subjects of Long Island and New England, Parkes painted in Europe, North Africa, the Caribbean and Central America.
Angus Wilkie, in his 2005 monograph on the artist, observes that Simon Parkes’ paintings “encourage recollection and enable one to observe the honest character of landscape in a fresh light. Arousing memories of lolling summer hours that enhance the whole of life, his plein air landscapes welcome a dialogue with the natural world and beckon a swift return to familiar haunts.”[1]
Parkes lived in New York City, East Hampton, and Swan’s Island, Maine. His New York City art conservation studio remained pre-eminent in the field for 45 years until his untimely passing in August 2025.
