Artist Biography
The painter and illustrator Julia Henshaw Dewey was born in Batavia, New York. She studied art with C. M. Dewey, whom she eventually married. Working in New York City, Dewey created landscape, figure, and portrait scenes. She was elected a National Academician in 1898 and was also a member of the National Association of Women Artists and the National Arts Club. Her work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1888–1893 in addition to The Art Institute of Chicago and the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition.
