J. Alden Weir

Artist Biography

Part of an important legacy of American artists, Julian Alden Weir was the son of Robert Walter, an influential drawing instructor at West Point, and brother to John Ferguson, an accomplished Hudson River School painter. Julian made a name for himself as a member of the legendary Ten American Painters who popularized Impressionism in the United States. He was also a founding member of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors and served as its president, as well as an academician of the National Academy of Design, another organization for which he served as president. Weir exhibited at every major venue of his time, including the 1913 Armory Show. His paintings are in the permanent collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
