Artist Biography
Fortunato Arriola was born in Mexico in 1827 and moved to San Francisco with his family in 1857. The artist exhibited his work at the Mechanics Institute Fairs in 1864 and 1865 as well as the National Academy of Design in 1872. Contemporary critics especially praised Arriola’s paintings depicting moonlight and tropical scenes. His work has been collected by the California Historical Society and the Oakland Museum of California.
