Constantin Westchiloff was born in Russia and studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States before ultimately settling in New England, where he died in 1945. Westchiloff is best known for his seascapes—particularly views of the New England coastline—but was also highly regarded for his landscapes, portraits, figure studies, and genre scenes. Working primarily in oil, he imbued his depictions of New England’s rugged landscapes and seascapes with a sense of drama characteristic of the region. Westchiloff’s work can be found in museum collections at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Russian History Museum, among others.
