Arthur James Emery Powell
(1864 - 1956)
Born in Vanwert, Ohio, Arthur James Powell lived in New York City and Dover Plains, New York. He studied at the San Francisco School of Design, the St. Louis School of Fine Art, and the Academie Julian in Paris. He was a painter and muralist, and his murals are at the Methodist and St. James churches in Dover Plains and the Bowen Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
Powell was a member of the National Academy of Design at the level of academician (1921-1956). He was also a member of the Salmagundi Club; one of the founders of Allied Artists of America, New York; president of the Dutchess County Art Association, Poughkeepsie, New York; and a member of the American Watercolor Society, New York. Powell had exhibitions at each of these organizations and was awarded many prizes over the years, including: Salmagundi Club, New York, NY, Charles Vezin (1858-1942) Prize, thumb-box (1913), Salmagundi Sketch prize (1928), Isadore prize (1930), Salmagundi prize for oil (1931); Allied Artists of America, New York, NY, Allied Artist prize (1930); National Arts Club, New York, NY, National Arts Club sketch prize (1931).
