This watercolor is likely a study for a larger painting on canvas, titled Shingling the First Baptist Church, Gloucester, which sold at auction on November 20, 2014 through Sotheby’s for $3,525,000.
Childe Hassam visited the seaside town of Gloucester, Massachusetts numerous times throughout his career. The fishing village offered the artist picturesque views to sketch, and he painted several similar depictions looking down from a high vantage point. Hassam created this watercolor in July of 1919.
