This work depicts Alan Messersmith, a longtime friend of the artist, on Murphy Road at the Messersmith Farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The Messersmith’s were neighbors of Wyeth and he frequently depicted their farm. The composition of this watercolor is almost identical to a tempera painting titled End of the Road, which Wyeth completed in the same year.

Born in 1917 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, Andrew Newell Wyeth was the son of the famous artist and illustrator N.C. Wyeth and Carolyn Brenneman Bockius. As a child, Wyeth was tutored at home and began an apprenticeship with his father at the age of fifteen.
