On June 28, 1875, Charles Hoffbauer was born in Paris, France; at the age of seventeen the young artist enrolled at the École National des Beaux-Arts where his peers included Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, and Albert Marquet.(1) Hoffbauer’s studies were interrupted when he was called to army duty in March 1896, and after spending eighteen months stationed in
