Note: The IRT Ninth Avenue Line, often referred to as the Ninth Avenue El (Elevated), was the first elevated railway in New York. Opening in July 1868, the service originally ran from Battery Place northward to Cortlandt Street. It went out of operation in June 1940 and was replaced with the underground IND Eighth Avenue Line, which now includes the A, B, C, D, and E trains through western Manhattan.
