Consider the collector who came to the gallery not long ago and desperately wanted to buy three expensive paintings. He became increasingly agitated, unable to summon the conviction to complete the sale. I asked him what was his greatest concern. He replied, “Lou, I love the paintings, but everything is so unpredictable. Sometimes it feels like the world is coming to an end.” I extended my hand and made this solemn promise: I guaranteed that he would get his money back if the world ended. We laughed long and hard, realizing the absurdity of this sort of thinking. He bought the paintings.
