Biography
Best known for his lively, sun-drenched beach scenes of women and children, Edward Potthast achieved considerable acclaim from collectors and critics alike. Created in a vibrant impressionist style, his paintings of Coney Island and Brighton Beach won prizes at the National Academy of Design, the American Water Color Society, the Salmagundi Club, and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. As one critic remarked: “when a man paints a theme as well as Potthast paints seashore scenes, we’ll forgive him for sticking to it to the exclusion of other subjects.” His paintings are now in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Butler Institute of American Art, and The Brooklyn Museum of Art.
