A. Lassell Ripley

Artist Biography

Born in 1896 in Wakefield, Massachusetts, Aiden Lassell Ripley developed an affinity for the outdoors at a young age. His subject matter was deeply influenced by his early experience as a sportsman in the wooded landscape surrounding his childhood home. Ripley attended The School of the Boston Museum of Art, where he trained under Phillip Hale and, in 1924, was awarded a Paige Traveling Fellowship, which allowed him to study art in France, Holland and North Africa. It was in these countries that he honed his painting skills and learned to paint in the plein-air style of artists such as Frank Benson. Examples of Ripley’s works can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago, High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
